IL Illinois OSHA Training and OSHA Information
Illinois is the 21st state in the United States, located in the Midwest region. Illinois is ranked 25th in land area with 57,918 square miles and 5th in population with nearly a population of 12.5 million. This state is also known as the “Land of Lincoln” because the 16th president spent most of his life, practicing law there and lived in Springfield.
Construction is one of the industries in which workers are most frequently injured or killed. According to OSHA and NIOSH, workers in construction activities accounted for 1 in 5 on-the-job fatalities recorded in 2004 and 1 in 10 nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses recorded that in 2004 in United States.
According to the numbers published by US department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, a total of 5,702 workers – 194 from Illinois -- lost their lives to work injuries in this country in 2005. In 2004, 208 workers lost their lives in Illinois. In 2005, a rate of 4.4 injuries and illnesses per 100 full-time workers was recorded for workers in Illinois, compared to 4.7 in 2004. The private sector incidence rate was recorded at 4.1 in 2005 and 4.4 in 2004.
(Case counts and statistics from http://www.bls.gov/iif/oshstate.htm).
The fatality rate for construction workers in the private construction industry was 12 per hundred thousand (100,000) workers in 2004 which is fourth highest among all the industry sectors while the average for all industries is 4.1.
Injuries and Illness at the work continues to be a key factor for workers reporting away from work and hence is a major factor in reduced productivity and also affecting workers ability to earn more.
With all the factors above and continuous efforts by OSHA and other government organizations, it is imperative for construction companies to get their workers trained as well as the construction workers to avoid fatal injuries, loss of pay etc.
