On April 30th, 1812 Louisiana became the 18th state to enter the union of United States. The “Child of the Mississippi” as it’s otherwise known; Louisiana supports a population of nearly 4.5 million with a density of 102.6 per square mile. The state is ranked 31st area wise with 16% water covering a total area of 51,885 square mile.
Construction is one of the industries in which workers are most frequently injured or killed. According to OSHA and NIOSH, workers in construction activities accounted for 1 in 5 on-the-job fatalities recorded in 2004 and 1 in 10 nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses recorded that in 2004 in United States.
According to the numbers published by US department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, a total of 5,702 workers – 111 from Louisiana -- lost their lives to work injuries in this country in 2005. In 2004, 121 workers lost their lives in Louisiana. In 2005, a rate of 5.5 injuries and illnesses per 100 full-time workers was recorded for workers in Louisiana, compared to 5.2 in 2004. The private sector incidence rate was recorded at 3.1 in 2005 and 3.4 in 2004.
(Case counts and statistics from http://www.bls.gov/iif/oshstate.htm).
The fatality rate for construction workers in the private construction industry was 12 per hundred thousand (100,000) workers in 2004 which is fourth highest among all the industry sectors while the average for all industries is 4.1.
Injuries and Illness at the work continues to be a key factor for workers reporting away from work and hence is a major factor in reduced productivity and also affecting workers ability to earn more.
With all the factors above and continuous efforts by OSHA and other government organizations, it is imperative for construction companies to get their workers trained as well as the construction workers to avoid fatal injuries, loss of pay etc.
