West Virginia is a state of the United States in the Appalachia region. It is also known as Mountain State due to the fact that it is the only state that is located entirely within the Appalachian mountain range. Construction is one of the industries in which workers are most frequently injured or killed. According to OSHA and NIOSH, workers in construction activities accounted for 1 in 5 on-the-job fatalities recorded in 2004 and 1 in 10 nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses recorded that in 2004 in United States.

According to the numbers published by US department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, a total of 5,702 workers – 46 from West Virginia — lost their lives to work injuries in this country in 2005. In 2004, 58 workers lost their lives in West Virginia.

The fatality rate for construction workers in the private construction industry was 12 per hundred thousand (100,000) workers in 2004 which is fourth highest among all the industry sectors while the average for all industries is 4.1.
